The TD Vancouver International Jazz Festival is bringing Grammy-nominated electronic artist Bonobo and his quintet to the Queen Elizabeth Theatre on June 25.
Tickets for the show, as well as for the 10-concert Innovation Series at the Ironworks, are on sale now at coastaljazz.ticketfly.com. Choose any three for $48.
Among the series highlights: The return of brilliant Chicago cellist Tomeka Reid with her Quartet (June 22), featuring bassist Jason Roebke, drummer Tomas Fujiwara and guitarist Mary Halvorson. Halvorson is rightfully considered one of the most exciting six-string masters in jazz or any other genre these days. Her last local appearances left jaws on the floor.
Of course, Wilco lead guitarist Nels Cline (June 23) is no slouch, either. Named one of the Top 100 guitarists of all time by Rolling Stone, he will be appearing with drummer Scott Amendola as the duo Stretch Woven. Expect serious jamming.
Ironworks is typically the place where mega-fans hang out into the wee hours hearing outside sounds. Its shows are likely to sell out thanks to fantastic booking by Rainbow Robert. In fact, the jazz festival seems to be going through a major revival this year following the retirement of founding artistic director Ken Pickering and others.
