The cast of Supernatural had a ball last season. Now someone else has it.
In keeping with an annual tradition from the set of the B.C.-filmed fantasy drama, one lucky fan has won of the most coveted pieces of memorabilia from the show: the SPN tape ball.
The actors insist this is more than just a colourful ball of tape, although it is certainly that too: the SPN tape ball is made up of the colour-coded strips of adhesive used to mark a performer’s place in a scene. This is tape with a purpose. “The SPNTapeball is a tangible archive of every moment spent on the set of Supernatural all year,” explains the blurb on the collectible’s gofundme page.
The steady growth of the ball for season 12, which had its finale on May 18 of last year, has been documented all year on its Instagram, @spntapeball.
Rather than merely give this year’s ball away for kicks (although it seems like it would make a poor soccer ball, so it’s probably not actually for kicks), Supernatural gave the season 12 tape ball away in a charity contest, with 100 per cent of the proceeds benefiting the BC Children’s Hospital and Adopt-a-School in Vancouver.
Fans could enter the contest with a $10 donation, although more money meant more chances to win the ball, which is signed by most of the show’s cast, including Jared Padalecki, Jensen Ackles, Misha Collins, Mark Pellegrino and several others.
In the end, the contest raised $33,000 before the winner, “Kaylin C from Connecticut”, was announced on June 7.
Don’t despair if you missed out on your chance to get this one-of-a-kind collectible. Supernatural just wrapped their 13th season last month, which means another tape ball is on the way shortly, and with the show already renewed for a fourteenth season, there will be at least one more after that.
