Hollywood North: Vancouver film industry revs up for TV pilot season

Nancy Drew, Frankenstein’s monster and Batwoman will all be roaming the streets and solving crimes as the television pilot season gets rolling in Vancouver in March.

It will be a busy month for those working in B.C.’s film and television industry with 11 wannabe TV series shooting here.

Here is a look at the 2019 TV pilot lineup in Vancouver:

Batwoman

The latest entry in The CW’s stable of Vancouver-filmed DC Comics series, which also includes The Flash, Arrow, Supergirl and Legends of Tomorrow.

Starring: Ruby Rose (Batwoman); Camrus Johnson (Batwing); Nicole Kang (Mary Hamilton)

Summary: Kate Kane, armed with a passion for social justice and a flair for speaking her mind, soars onto the streets of Gotham as Batwoman, an out lesbian and highly trained street fighter primed to snuff out the failing city’s criminal resurgence. But don’t call her a hero yet. In a city desperate for a saviour, Kate must overcome her own demons before embracing the call to be Gotham’s symbol of hope.

Shooting: March 4-25


Nasim Pedrad is the creator and star of Chad.

Chad

A comedy created by and starring Saturday Night Live regular Nasim Pedrad.

Starring: Nasim Pedrad (Chad), Jake Ryan (Peter)

Summary: The story of a 14-year-old Persian boy, who desperately tries to fit in, cope with his mother’s dating life, and reconcile his cultural identity

Shooting: March 25-April 1


Frankenstein

A CBS crime series from executive producer Jason Tracey (Burn Notice, Elementary, We Were Soldiers)

Starring: TBA

Summary: It centres on a San Francisco homicide detective who’s mysteriously brought back to life after being killed in the line of duty.

Shooting: March 19-April 5


neXT

An A.I. thriller for Fox from executive producer Manny Coto (24) and the creative duo of Glenn Ficarra and John Requa (This Is Us).

Starring: TBA

Summary:  A brilliant but paranoid former tech CEO who joins a Homeland Cybersecurity Agent and her team to stop a terrifying artificial intelligence outbreak that threatens us all.

Shooting: March 26-April 11


Ride or Die

A murder-mystery comedy from writer Matt McConkey (Heathers TV series) for the U.S. cable channel POP TV.

Starring: Marley Shelton (Shauna), NeNe Leakes

Summary: When an elite spin studio is rocked by a strange murder, a down-on-her-luck outsider teams up with a true-crime buff to find the killer.

Shooting: Feb. 25-March 2


Vancouver’s Cobie Smulders stars in Stumptown.

Stumptown

Vancouver actress Cobie Smulders (Avengers, How I Met Your Mother) stars in this ABC detective drama.

Starring: Cobie Smulders

Summary: The show follows Dex Parios, a strong, assertive, and unapologetically sharp-witted army veteran working as a P.I. in Portland, Oregon.

Shooting: March 11-22


The Haunting of Nancy Drew

The CW, which in recent years has rebooted the Archie and Sabrina The Witch franchises, is now giving us a modern take on teen sleuth Nancy Drew.

Starring: Kennedy McMann (Nancy Drew), Leah Lewis, Tunji Kasim (Ned ‘Nick’ Nickerson)

Summary: An 18-year-old Nancy Drew makes plans to leave her hometown for college after high school graduation, but finds herself drawn into a supernatural murder mystery.

Shooting: March 25-April 9


Actress Heather Graham stars in The Hypnotist’s Love Story.

The Hypnotist’s Love Story

An ABC pilot based on the best-selling book by Big Little Lies author Liane Moriarty.

Starring: Heather Graham, Liza Lapira

Summary: Ellen O’Farrell is a professional hypnotherapist who works out of the eccentric beachfront home she inherited from her grandparents. It’s a nice life, except for her tumultuous relationship history.

Shooting: March 10-27


Tyler Posey, who starred on Teen Wolf, is part of The Lost Boys cast.

The Lost Boys

The CW’s TV adaptation of the 1987 vampire film starring Jason Patric, Corey Haim and Corey Feldman.

Starring: Tyler Posey, Medalion Rahimi, Kiele Sanchez, Dakota Shapiro

Summary: Two brothers move to Santa Carla with their mother, only to find the town is a haven for vampires.

Shooting: March 13-April 2


Republic of Sarah

A CBS drama from writer Jeffrey Paul King (Elementary).

Starring: TBA

Summary: It centres on a small New Hampshire town that is thrust onto the world stage when the discovery of a valuable resource within its borders compels the residents to declare themselves an independent nation.

Shooting: March 11-26


Jane Levy plays Zoey in Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist.

Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist

The NBC pilot is described as a “musical dramedy” from executive producer Paul Feig (Bridesmaids, Freaks and Geeks, The Office).

Starring: Jane Levy (Zoey), Mary Steenburgen, Skylar Austin, Alex Newell

Summary: A young woman discovers she has the ability to hear the innermost thoughts of people around her as songs and musical numbers.

Shooting: March 14-29
