During the COVID-19 crisis, Vancouver actor Brian Markinson’s reading list has included Born to Run by Bruce Springsteen, How to Change Your Mind by Michael Pollan and ‘anything’ by Joan Didion.

With galleries locked, concert halls closed and theatres dark, Postmedia has reached out to B.C. artists of all types to find out what they are doing during these trying COVID-19 times.

Actor Brian Markinson ( Tribal , Mad Men , Romeo Section ) has taken some time to answer our isolation questionnaire.

Q: Where are you spending most of your time?

A: I spend my time split between hiking the North Shore with my wife Nancy and our Vizsla Stella, on a motorcycle and home reading, online and off.

Q: Who are you with?

A: I am home with Nancy, and our sons Evan and Isaac, both at home, I’m happy to say.

Q: Where are you getting your information?

A: I vet my news carefully. I try to stick to the experts, stay away from the political hackery, the Government of Canada website, WHO, CDC and I am a slave to podcasts.

Q: What is something you are doing that you don’t normally do?

A: Trying to live firmly in the NOW. Surrendering to the things I have no control over.

Q: What do you have lots of in your cupboards?

A: Canned tuna, rice, pastas, fruit and wine. Lots of wine.

Q: What have you been reading?

A: Born to Run by Bruce Springsteen, How to Change Your Mind by Michael Pollan and anything by Joan Didion.

Q: What have you been watching?

A: The Valhalla Murders, Top Chef, Survivor, The Voice, American Idol (there is a pattern).

Q: What are you doing for exercise?

A: The aforementioned HIKING.

Q: What worries you?

A: The reticence of a way-too-large percentage of the population to adapt to what is happening now.

Q: When this ends what will be different?

A: I think society has been moving in the wrong direction for some time now: Self absorbed, disconnected, capitalistic. My hope is that this will be a cold bucket of water. A reminder of what really matters in our lives. A shift to balance and the golden rule: Love thy neighbour as thyself.
