Vancouver newscaster Mike Killeen announced Thursday that he’s leaving CBC Vancouver News at 6 and stepping away from broadcasting completely.

“After four remarkable decades in broadcasting, I have decided it’s time for a change and I am moving on from CBC and the broadcast industry,” the news anchor said in a statement released by CBC. “I consider it a privilege to wrap up my broadcasting career at CBC, a trusted news organization that has always been committed to delivering accurate and local news.”

His future plans weren’t revealed in the statement.

Killeen had been co-anchoring CBC’s six o’clock newscast with Anita Bathe since 2018. He was hired a few months after being fired, along with co-anchor Tamara Taggart, from CTV as part of a mass shakeup in the network’s Vancouver newsroom. A graduate of BCIT, Killeen had worked at CTV since 2001.

The CBC says Bathe will continue to host CBC Vancouver News at 6.

“It is difficult to leave this team of consummate professionals, in particular my co-host Anita Bathe. I am so proud of what we have accomplished over the past few years and look forward to watching her take the reins and make the show her own. Anita, I’ll be tuning in at six. It has been an honour to be trusted by British Columbians to deliver the news — thank you,” Killeen said.

His final CBC newscast will be May 21.
